Borkai: The preparations are steaming ahead from this year

The preparations for the 2017 European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) in Győr are steaming ahead – said Zsolt Borkai, the Mayor, and the President of the Hungarian Olympic Committee on Friday on the interview to the local reporters of the media.

‘Approximately the half of the expenses are covered by the state, the other half is provided by us to be able to organize such a monumental competition’ – explained Zsolt Borkai about the EYOF-project.

The government guaranteed an approximately ten billion HUF state subsidy for the realization of the project which will surely be utilized, and in the current state budget there is an amount of 1,6 billion HUF primarily for infrastructural developments.  ‘We would like to build a swimming pool here, this is the first step, then it will be followed by the construction of the road system connected to it’ – he noted.

The result of this will be such an establishment in which there will be an indoor fifty-meter swimming pool and an outdoor twenty-five-meter long warm-up pool. Besides them, two other halls will be built on the site of the former Dózsa-court; one of them can serve the purposes of combat sports, the other can be operated as a gymnasium.

‘Except for a big hall Győr possesses such medium sized halls where these sports and ball games can get on well with each other’ – he stated and by answering a question he mentioned  that they do not give up the plans to construct the multifunctional hall of the city of Győr.

Regarding to the previously mentioned facts Borkai stated that it is unlikely for the city to cover the more billion HUF costs of the investment from their own resources. He noted that he is ‘working really hard on getting other resources’ and as he added ‘the light can be seen at the end of the tunnel’.

The Mayor mentioned that one part of the investment is a tennis court adequate for organizing international competitions, and the renovation of the athletic courts, one for competitions, the other for warm-up.

Some other already extant sports establishments will be renewed like the Magvassy- and the university hall, the Molnár Vid Bertalan Community House of Győrszentiván, and the gymnasiums of two settlements nearby - Győrújbarát and Ikrény -  since competitions will be organized in them, too.

Finally such a sports complex will be established that can be utilized by the inhabitants of Győr as well after the EYOF, but can simultaneously serve as an Olympic centre, not competing with the well functioning - but need to be improved- training camp of Tata but completing it from some aspects. A hotel investment would supplement the project, too.

The Mayor added that in the 2013 budget of the city the other expenses about EYOF are presented nearly with the amount of one billion HUF. Money was reserved for these purposes even in the last year’s budget, what is more beyond the state subsidy one and a half billion HUF are spent for the preparations every year.

He noted: A dormitory, which can accommodate more hundred people, is planned to be constructed close to the university from the resources of the European Union, which can accommodate the four thousand competitors and some other people of their company.

Zsolt Borkai also mentioned: The regional constructional, logistics, and service provider companies ‘can benefit’ from the EYOF-investment, moreover, the Festival is also a relevant event as regards the aspect of the country image of Hungary as EYOF ‘ is not only about the sport but the youth, the young generation and the culture’.
