Győr will be the venue for Olympic events!

Our city has won the right to organize the 2017 European Youth Olympic Festival.

The European Olympic Committee (EOC) had a session on 7th and 8th December in Rome where a decision was made about the venue of 2017 European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF). This venue is going to be our city!

The Hungarian delegation was lead by Zsolt Borkai, the Mayor, and the President of the Hungarian Olympic Committee, who held a personal presentation for the members of the EOC. In his speech he concluded: ‘besides we put great emphasis on strengthening the Olympic conception, it is considered to be our mission to let the role models of the future to catch a glimpse of the precious Hungarian culture and to get to know the national traditions and customs of their sport mates and the diversity of the city of Győr. That is the reason why we do our best to provide the chance for the young talents to compete under the best conditions in the spirit of fair play, solidarity and friendship and then to leave Hungary with memorable experiences’.

In addition to the report the nearly 150 pages long tender was complemented with a spectacular movie of introduction, what is more the European decision makers got a taste of the Hungarian cuisine as well. The efforts of the city and the MOB proved to be effective, as Győr won the right to organize the event! Zsolt Borkai, Tivadar Somogyi, the Deputy Mayor and Patrick Hickey, the President of the EOC also signed the contract of the host city.

By the way, the tendering process started with the submission of the letter of intent, and then the Hungarian government also expressed its intention to support the project, which was embodied by the guarantee of a 10 billion HUF state subsidy. Győr hosted three members of the EOC in summer, who could get familiar with the city and the details of the organization. By the end of the summer the detailed tender documentations were delivered to the European Olympic Committee.

The Hungarian Olympic Committee is the most crucial professional supporter of the Hungarian organization of the EYOF. The MOB intends to strengthen one of its most vital missions, the popularization of the Olympic conception. The professional activities are supported equally by the nine sports of EYOF - swimming, athletics, gymnastics, cycling, judo, tennis, handball, basketball, volleyball – which was verified by their support declaration in the documentation of the tender.

The choice of the venue is also not accidental. Győr won the title of being the ‘Sportiest city in Hungary’ in 2010, the capital city of the county in the Small Plain has given place for several international competitions, and the city can be proud of it current sport results. The opportunity to organize EYOF means a great development and advancement for Hungary and for Győr, hence such infrastructural improvements could be realized in our city (including the competitive swimming pool, athletic fields or the tennis centre) which can encourage the sport life of Győr and the training of the young talents.

European Youth Olympic Festival was first organized in 1991, since then it has become one of the world’s biggest sport events for youth. EYOF is the only multisport-event of Europe, which also has a winter and a summer version. It is organized in every other year with the participation of nearly 4000 sportspeople and accredited partakers of 49 countries. The number of those who are interested is estimated to be around 30-50 thousand people.

Our young sportspeople reach excellent results every time, for example the last time in Trabzon along with the five gold-, three silver- and five bronze medals they won the sixth place on the total medal table. The best result was reached in 2003 on the competition in Paris when we won the second place among the nations with our 14 gold medals.

In its formality the EYOF is very similar to the adults’ Olympic Games, as the five circles are presented,  the Olympic flame flashes, the opening and closing ceremonies are organized and the competitors are accommodated in the Olympic village. The event brings about several cultural programmes besides sports, in brief it is a real festival; a festival will move to Győr in the summer of 2017 with the participants of 49 nations, which can be beneficial for our city not only in the field of sports but even in the field of tourism.
