„We will meet again, I promise” – interview with Tamás Tor, EYOF volunteer coordinator

We have planned for a long time to do an interview with Tomi Tor. We had to wait until the end of the EYOF to do so., since he worked and smiled through the whole event as a volunteer coordinator. He openly talked about everything regarding the volunteer's world and about settling in Győr maybe someday.

–I came from Budapest to the invitation of my friend Rudi Pásztor, who was a leader of the volunteers' on the EYOF. I have been doing volunteer work for four years now both domestically and internationally. The EYOF was a big challenge from the very start, and reminiscing about it now I have to say it was an unbelievable event, where a huge amount of work waited for the volunteers. The support of the Erasmus+ Sport Program of the European Union meant a huge financial security during the project at the planning of volunteer training, events, uniforms, catering and logistics.

Tomi and his colleagues directed more than 1500 volunteers from all age groups. Hungarians and foreigners both felt important to offer their help during the EYOF.

– I am here from the beginning, I met almost every volunteer personally, and I was there by the auditions too. I have a good name and face recognizing memory, I noticed a lot of them, so good relationships and friendships were made. It's good to be a volunteer because firstly you have a responsibility and secondly you can relax, you are amongst people, you get to know new faces and places. I saw on the participating volunteers that they loosened up day by day, they are enjoying the whole event more and more and maybe they didn't even know at the beginning what they will be a part of.

While we speak a lot of volunteers arrive to get their "thank you" certificate, which will remain an eternal memory for them. Young people, older people, it a very diverse age group. This was new just for a little while for everyone, than it became conventional with time.

– We could give everyone a job. Even those people too, who didn't speak any foreign languages. One of my favourite stories is linked to this too: an elderly lady was set in the catering pavilion, she watched with pleasure the appetite of the athletes. She met her gaze with a curly haired boy from Portugal and they started to talk, with tooth and nail of course. At the end she just caressed the boy and said "beautiful" to him. It's an eternal memory. That's it. Sometimes you don't have to know a language and speak with words.

It turned out also, that during the EYOF so far strange people made friendships. After work they used to go in groups to the city to relax a bit, they took a walk, chatted, drank some beer or just enjoyed to be a part of a community. The youth of today lives in a very stimulus rich environment, the EYOF showed them, that the personal relationships and the common experiences are still very important.

– I have a very stable friendship circle many of them do volunteer work. They were by my side now too; they knew how to cheer me up in my strained or harder moments, how to make me go on. It was good to see that the EYOF volunteers had also the opportunity to make so deep and maybe lifelong friendships during the event. I think there will be some big stories, I hope the better ones will reach to you too one day.

Tamás Tor spend the bigger part of his everyday life in Győr since February, he got to know and got to love the city. He thinks he could maybe settle here someday, as he said, we will hear about him in the future. This is no wonder; it was obvious that the volunteers grew fond of the smiling guy. They signed a volunteer t-shirt for him on the last day, a vast amount of them became friends with him on social websites and he still gets messages to the e-mail address.

– This address will surely work up until the end of September, but we ask for patience from those who send us e-mails, we will answer you, but we have still a lot of work to do. Many volunteers couldn't get their certificate yet; we will provide opportunity to do it later. At the end of September we will celebrate a big EYOF volunteer closing event, we will inform everyone about it in time. So we really don't say goodbye to this adventure yet.
