Sport Centre and Athlete’s Villages are under construction
Csaba Simon, CEO of Győr Projekt Ltd. who is responsible for the construction of the venues, gave an update on the current state of the Sport Centre and the Athlete's Villages.
The new Sport Centre will be the venue for athletics, judo, tennis, and artistic gymnastics during EYOF 2017. The training field for Track and Field is already finished, and being used by local athletes, while all the competition venues are under construction parallel. Overall the building process of the new facilities is going better than originally planned, and the aim is to keep up this speed for the remaining time as well.
This project costs 6,6 Billion Hungarian Forints (around 20 million Euros) which is subsidised by the state. The deadline for finishing the works is 31 May 2017, including the tennis courts, two athletic fields, heavy athletics hall, gymnasium, and a multi-functional hall. The Centre is being built up in the neighbourhood of the new swimming hall creating a real Olympic sport centre.
The delegations of the European Youth Olympic Festival 2017 will be accommodated in two Athlete's Villages which both are under construction at the moment. The first one is situated at the campus of Széchenyi István University and financed by the state and the municipality. It is being built on 20 thousand square meters with 550 dorm rooms together with various service rooms, such as hospitality areas and sport facilities. Paralell to this, the renovation of the old wing of the university dormitory is being carried out. The construction is underway while the university functions continuously, which requires additional coordination with utility providers regarding enhanced capacity.
The other village is situated on the ground of the old oil factory, which is subsidised by a contractual partner. The building will consist of 200 new apartments and is planned to be a new home for many families after the Festival as a legacy of the event.
The above mentioned three constructions are all different but they serve a common purpose; to provide top quality facilities for the participants of the EYOF 2017 and become a long term legacy for the city of Győr and its inhabitants after that.
