As a memorable moment, Győr took over the baton from Tbilisi in this summer, so at the end of September, the Coordination Commission members arrived to Győr that is already the next organiser city of the European Youth Olympic Festival. 'Győr is a great host of international sports events, let us just recall the recently organized women handball and basketball European championships, or the short time ago ended ICF Canoe Marathon World Championships, which brought outstanding success for the home team. We do our utmost to host the first Olympic multi-sport event of Hungary in a similarly successful way', said Mr. Zsolt Borkai. The mayor of the city added that besides the Municipality of the city of Győr, the Hungarian Government also makes a significant contribution to the preparations of the event: for the construction of Audi Arena Győr, the Hungarian government provided 5 billion forints and for the construction of EYOF facilities, further 10 billion forints.
As Mr. Péter Bolla, Mayor's Commissioner explained, the Organizing Committee of Győr, the experts of the Municipality of the City of Győr and the Hungarian Olympic Committee presented the already completed and planned facilities in detail, as well as catering, IT, accreditation system, security, sports, marketing and communication related tasks, together with cultural programs, accommodation, transport and volunteers connected questions. The delegation members visited the competition venues of the event, among them the Audi Arena Győr, the Magvassy Mihály Sports Hall, the ETO Park Hotel, the Széchenyi István University, the University hall and the new sports hall, the facilities of the Radnóti Street Sports Centre – like the Aqua Sport Center –, and also the training venues, such as the gyms of the Bercsényi Miklós Secondary School and the Audi Hungaria school. On the evaluation meeting of the CoCom visit, Joseph Cassar, Djordje Visacki, Emmanuel Katsiadakis and Katerina Nycova commission members commented very positively on their experiences in Győr. It was stated that the preparation works have shown very good progress and the quality of the already completed facilities is highly satisfactory. According to them, it is a great advantage of Győr that there are no long distances between the venues, so a real Olympic atmosphere can be created for the athletes and spectators, spreading to the whole city. The Coordination Commission members also shared the strengths and weaknesses of the EYOF TBILISI 2015 with the Organizing Committee of Győr, and they also indicated that their visits will be even more frequent in the future, in order to continuously track the current state of the organization work in Győr, about what the Organization Committee will report next time in November, on the occasion of the European Olympic Committee's next General Assembly, in Prague.
The first summer EYOF was organized in 1991, in Brussels. Győr will be the 14th organizing city in the row, where approximately 4000 young athletes will compete in ten different sports. Besides athletics, judo, handball, basketball, volleyball, gymnastics, swimming, cycling and tennis, the successful Hungarian sports discipline, kayak-canoe will also be part of the competition in Győr.
